My Personal Profile
About Me
My name is Martine Balderston. I grew up in the lowermainland, spent several years living in the Kootenays and moved to Nanaimo in 2010. Growing up in the lower mainland, I participated in numerous sports, extra curricular activities and spent a lot of time hiking and camping with my family. Highlights growing up include hiking in Cathedral Park, canoeing the Bowron Lakes, skiing at Manning Park, winning gold and silver in wrestling at the Western Summer Games, and organizing an International Wheelchair Tennis Festival for six consecutive years.
During high school I participated in the outdoors club, peer counselling group, wrestling team, cross country running team, volleyball team and worked in the office. After graduation, I attended Douglas College where I continued to wrestle and received by Associate Arts Degree and Sport Science Diploma. After Douglas College I continued my education at Simon Fraser University. After gaining work experience as a Special Education Assistant, I applied to the Post Bachelorette Education Program. I graduated and gain my teachers certificate in December 2013.
In 2016 life changed for me significantly with the birth of my son, but it definitely didn't slow me down. While I took some time off from substituting, I continued to travel and achieve personal goals. When Alex was 2 months old we took VIA Rail up to Prince Rupert with a stop in Jasper. When Alex was 3 months, I returned to teach ESL students visiting from Japan. Then in January I travelled to NYC, Washington D.C., New Orleans, Santa Monica and Mexico for another adventure. April 29, 2016 we started a cycle adventure. We rode from Victoria, BC to Warroad Minnesota.
