AAC - Augmentative and Alternative Communication
AAC is used by individuals with speech and language impairments. AAC maybe used short-term until a child develops communication or long-term for those students with permanent disorders like: Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or Lou Garrick Disease, head injuries or Parkinson Disease. It also is used with other forms of communication like gestures.
ACC decreases frustration association with difficulty communicating, increases academic performance, increases social interaction and increases mental health.
There are many different AAC produces that range from digital devices to picture/symbol cards. Devices are intended to increase comprehension, understanding and processing. To access these produces students have to consult with medical professionals, occupational therapists and speech and language pathologists. It is also recommended to have a no-technology back-up when digital devices fail.
Examples of Low to Mild Tech Systems:
Single Message Device: Big Mack Switch, Go Button, Talking Symbol Note Taker
Multiple Message Devices: Hip Talker, Voice Pal (plus), Tech Talk/Speak, Partner 4, Super Talker, Smart Scans, 7 Level Communication Builders, Go Talk & Pocket Go Talk
